Our Mission

Classic video games deserve better. At Digital Eclipse, we treat them with the same care and respect given to other artistic mediums.

In its original incarnation in 1994, Digital Eclipse pioneered accurate video game re-releases, emulating vintage arcade games well before “emulation” was a household word. 25 years later, we’ve been reborn as a new kind of studio—one dedicated to not only restoring gaming’s heritage, but to preserving it and keeping it alive and available for future generations.

The Eclipse Engine

Digitize a movie once, and it’s watchable forever, no matter how technology evolves. Scan a book, and it can be reprinted infinitely. But if you port a video game, it’s only playable on that one platform. Getting it running anywhere else requires a significant amount of work and investment.

At Digital Eclipse, this problem is a thing of the past. With the Eclipse Engine, the porting is done by the engine itself, not the games. Once a game is converted to our Eclipse format, it will run anywhere Eclipse does. And since we keep it updated, wherever we go, the games can easily follow.

The Digital Eclipse Philosophy

ACCURACY

Great games do not need a new coat of paint to be appealing. While we  often enhance classic games with our signature quality-of-life features like Watch Mode, Save/Load, and Rewind, they can also be played just as they were they day they were released.

CONTEXT

Games are more than just playable code. They are snapshots of a certain time, a certain place. We work closely with our partners to present original concept art, packaging, advertisements, and development history whenever it’s available. And when it’s not... we find it.

PRESENTATION

Tube TVs and antiquated video signals might be out of date today, but we know that classic game artwork was made to leverage their strengths and get around their limitations. Where possible, Digital Eclipse collections offer an option to simulate the technology of their time.

SUSTAINABILITY

Porting a game once, for one platform generation, isn’t preservation. Our Eclipse Engine technology is constantly being updated for new platforms as they emerge. That means that after we’ve converted a game once, keeping it available is easy and inexpensive.
